Proofreading & Editing: Various people define these terms differently, so we approach them in this manner:

• • Basic Proofreading (Basic Service) — We focus on grammar, spelling, etc. In addition, proofreading will mark major formatting issues that need to be corrected by the author. Corrections are made, but comments are minimal.
  • General Editing (Plus Service) — We start with proofreading, and then we go beyond that to fix formatting issues for you and comment on significant content problems. This is also known as copy editing.
  • Advanced Editing (Premium Service) — We go beyond proofreading to include in-depth editing of your content — such as critiquing the rhetorical effectiveness of a business letter or advising how to improve dialogue in a novel. Explanations are more in-depth, when such details would be helpful.

Feedback Level: The amount of feedback can vary, depending on your audience and needs as a writer. We offer three levels.

• • Reader Feedback — An informed response from a thoughtful reader, pointing out areas of confusion or unclarity. Provided in the “basic” option.
  • Editorial Feedback — Detailed response from an editor, offering advice to improve overall quality; this is similar to submitting to an editor of a newspaper, journal, or magazine. Provided in the “plus” option.
  • Professional Feedback — Going beyond editorial feedback, professional feedback includes in-depth analysis, such as that needed for a multimillion-dollar business. Premium advice includes rhetorical feedback. Provided in the “premium” option.

Citation Checks: We review your citations for you, giving you a choice between three levels:

• • Basic — We point out citation errors in summary form, so you can fix the minor details. (Example: “All dates need a period after them.”) Provided in the “basic” option.
  • Specific — In addition to an overall check, we make obvious corrections in the citations for you. (Example: “We have added periods for you.”) Provided in the “plus” option.
  • Extreme — We not only correct citations, but when possible, assist with any missing information. (Example: “The author’s first name is missing; if you have the name, we can help you add this.”) Provided in the “premium” option.

Content Suggestions (Premium Only): We will propose reworded sentences (unique to the text) or recommend additional content when necessary. 

Rhetorical Analysis (Premium Only): Going beyond grammar, we will recommend places where the document can be more persuasive, convincing, effective, etc. This is especially helpful for cover letters, business documents, sales/marketing materials, and similar documents.

Design Analysis (Premium Only): We will mark and/or suggest areas where the visuals need improvement. For example, we will alert you of improper fonts, pixelated images, etc.

Professor Recheck (Premium Only): After the initial edit, if you have concerns about a specific sentence, a college instructor/professor will review that sentence for you. Contact us via chat to ask your specific question, and the support representative will review the sentence for you.
